October: Emily the Draft Horse
Come meet Emily. She is the largest horse on the farm standing at 20 hands high. Emily is an all black Percheron draft horse. Emily is 15 years old. She came to live at Glacier Rock Farms in 2006, when she was 10 with her mother Mindy. Before they lived at GRF the two horses worked many summers for an Amish farmer as a team to plant and harvest crops. Mindy passed away 2 years ago during a bitter cold spell in the winter, she was 22 years old. Emily misses her mom. At GRF Emily and Mindy pulled a small hay wagon, as well as a sleigh in the winter, around the farm. Emily and Mindy could pull up to 2 times their body weight, that’s about 4000 pounds!
Today Emily spends her days grazing in the pasture. She is good friends with Misty, our paint, and they hang out a lot together. When the farm is open Emily stands on the horse line so that visitors can see how big she is compared to the other horses, especially the miniature horses. When you visit the farm remember to look at Emily’s hoofs, they are very BIG. Emily is very gentle and also a little shy, sometimes you have to let her sniff you a bit before she will let you pet her, but once you do she enjoys it tremendously.
